Breeding Rabbits

How?

Now that you've decided why you're breeding and have chosen a quality breeding pair, it's time for the actual breeding to take place. Here is a step-by-step list to breeding your rabbits.

1. Start by bringing the doe to the buck's cage. If you bring the buck to the doe, the doe will often get territorial about her cage and will be less likely to let the buck mount her. On occasion, the buck will also get distracted and would rather explore the doe's cage than get the job done. So by bringing the doe to the buck's cage, you prevent both of those situations.

2. Within a few seconds, the buck should mount the doe from behind and if she is ready to breed, she will lift her tail for him. The full breeding should take a matter of 30 seconds or less and if it is successful, the buck will grunt and fall to the side.

3. Although it only takes one breeding, I like to repeat the breeding several times to ensure that it was successful. Usually I breed at night. I will do one breeding, then another 15 min later, and a last about an hour since the first one. If it is an extra hard doe to get bred, or I don't think she took, I'll sometimes do another breeding the next morning as well.

4. Next, mark your calendars! The gestation period of a rabbit is about 31 days, but she could go as early as Day 28 or as late as Day 35.

Getting Ready

To get ready for your doe's delivery, you will want to either build or buy a wooden or metal nestbox. I have included links to available nestboxes on the side of this page.
